(Dan Tri) – According to New York Times sources, the Russian tactical nuclear weapons warehouse in Belarus is said to be built in March 2023.

The New York Times on May 10 cited satellite photos showing the area believed to be the place to store Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

This storage location is said to be in the same city as where Belarus’s Iskander missiles are stored.

According to the New York Times, this facility appears to have been under construction since March 2023 and the buildings have just begun construction in recent weeks.

The above facility has features unique to Russian nuclear storage facilities.

To protect this facility, Belarus has deployed an air defense system since around mid-2023.

Hans Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists, said that nuclear development in Belarus `seems intended to deter member states on NATO’s eastern flank, but will not give Russia a new military advantage.`

Belarus, a Russian ally, has a 1,250km border with NATO members Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

Tactical nuclear weapons are weapons designed for use on the battlefield, have a smaller design and are used at short distances, unlike strategic nuclear weapons which are used to attack targets.

Belarus adopted a new military doctrine last month, authorizing the use of nuclear weapons for the first time.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko announced on May 10 that Russia and Belarus will hold joint exercises with tactical nuclear weapons, but affirmed that this activity does not target any third country and is only for the purpose of testing capabilities.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 6 ordered the military to conduct exercises with tactical nuclear weapons to respond to the `threat from the West`.

Moscow affirmed that the exercise was only aimed at ensuring Russia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, `cooling down hot heads` in Western countries with the idea of deploying infantry to Ukraine.
