After Mr. Macron’s remarks earlier this week, a series of countries – including Poland, Germany, the US, Italy, Britain and other NATO members – rejected the idea that they could deploy forces to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, a public survey conducted by French newspaper Le Figaro on February 29 also revealed that more than two-thirds of French citizens disapproved of President Macron’s comments about the possibility of NATO deploying to Ukraine.
So far, only two other NATO members, Estonia and Lithuania, support the French president, saying that sending troops to Ukraine should not be ruled out.
Russia condemned Mr. Macron’s statements, warning that the deployment of NATO forces to Ukraine would `inevitably` lead to a direct confrontation between Russia and the US-led alliance.
In his State of the Union address to parliament on February 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that the scenario of Western troops sending troops into Ukraine could spark a nuclear war.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev warned in July 2023 that `Western madness leads to absolutely nothing other than a dead end and World War 3 is approaching`.
Mr. Medvedev accused the West of waging a comprehensive hybrid war against Russia.
According to Mr. Medvedev, the West is `pushing the world to the brink of World War III, to a global disaster, a scenario where there will never be a winner.`
`The US and Europe pump Russia’s opponents with all kinds of lethal weapons, inciting attacks on our border areas, carrying out sabotage and political assassinations,` Mr. Medvedev said.
US President Joe Biden also warned that the risk of the world facing a nuclear apocalypse scenario is the highest since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.
